How to Cut Down on Food Waste and Save Cash

By Tom Nonmacher

Hello, fellow savers! We all know food is one of our big-ticket items in the monthly budget. But did you know that according to the USDA, the average American family of four wastes an estimated $1,500 on food each year? That's a lot of money that could be invested, saved for a family vacation, or used to pay off debt. Today, we're going to discuss some strategies to cut down on food waste and save cash.

First and foremost, planning is crucial. Start by making a weekly meal plan. Be practical and consider your schedule. If you know you'll be busy, plan for quick and easy meals. The idea is to think about what you are going to eat for the week, make a list of the ingredients you need, and stick to it! This way you'll avoid buying unnecessary items that end up being thrown away.

Next, let's talk about portion sizes. Most of us have a tendency to cook more than we need, which inevitably leads to waste. Try to cook what's just enough for you and your family to eat in one meal. If you do end up with leftovers, don't let them go to waste. Pack them for lunch the next day or freeze them for those days when you don't feel like cooking.

A great way to cut down on food waste is to learn to love your leftovers. There's no rule that says leftovers have to be eaten as-is. Be creative! Turn leftover roast chicken into a delicious chicken salad for lunch, or use leftover veggies in a hearty soup. Remember, the goal is to utilize every bit of food you purchase.

Understanding the difference between "sell by," "use by," and "best by" dates can also make a big difference in reducing food waste. Most foods are still safe to eat a few days past these dates. Use your senses. If it smells, looks, and tastes okay, it probably is. However, when in doubt, throw it out. Food safety should never be compromised.

Lastly, store your food properly. Different foods have different storage needs. Some fruits and vegetables last longer in the fridge, while others do better at room temperature. Learning how to store your food properly will extend its life and save you money in the long run.

By implementing these strategies, you can significantly cut down on food waste and save a lot of money over time. Remember, every bit of food saved is money saved. If we all do our part, we can save cash and reduce our impact on the environment. Happy saving!
